چکیده

The production of ketogluconic acids from glucose by fermentation methods has been of particular interest to this Bureau as a means of extending the industrial utilization of agricultural products. Our investigations have led to the development of a rapid and efficient process for the production of 5-ketogluconic acid from glucose by Acetobacter suboxydans, as heretofore reported (Stubbs et al., 1940). However, we have not found it possible to conduct a fermentation with our strain of A. suboxydans on any substrate in such a manner that 2-ketogluconic acid is the major product, as has been reported by Bernhauer and Knobloch (1938). These authors found that a certain strain of A. suboxdans gave predominantly 2-ketogluconic acid when cultivated on gluconic acid salts, although when cultivated on a glucose substrate, 5-ketogluconic acid was the principal product. A more recent publication by Bernhauer et al. (1940) indicates that such results are dependent on the particular strain of A. suboxydars used, for a second strain tested by them yielded 5-ketogluconic acid when cultivated either on glucose or gluconates. Although we have not succeeded in producing 2-ketogluconic acid with A. suboxydans, we have found that this product can be very efficiently obtained from glucose by the action of members of a different genus of bacteria. An organism which appeared as a contaminant during an A. suboxydans fer-

Formation of arabinose, ribulose and tartronic acid from 2-keto-D-gluconic acid.

For some years evidence that 2-keto-D-gluconic acid is implicated in a number of biochemical systems, notably in Acetobacter species (Bernhauer & Gorlich, 1935; Kulka & Walker, 1954) and in Pseudomonas species (Lockwood, Tabenkin & Ward, 1941; Norris & Campbell, 1949) has been accumulating. Draft Genome Sequence of Acetobacter malorum CECT 7742, a Strain Isolated from Strawberry Vinegar

The present article reports the draft genome sequence of the strain Acetobacter malorum CECT 7742, an acetic acid bacterium isolated from strawberry vinegar. This species is characterized by the production of d-gluconic acid from d-glucose, which it further metabolizes to keto-d-gluconic acids.

Role of gluconic acid production in the regulation of biocontrol traits of Pseudomonas fluorescens CHA0.

The rhizobacterium Pseudomonas fluorescens CHA0 promotes the growth of various crop plants and protects them against root diseases caused by pathogenic fungi. The main mechanism of disease suppression by this strain is the production of the antifungal compounds 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (DAPG) and pyoluteorin (PLT). Direct plant growth promotion can be achieved through solubilization of inorga...

Acetic Acid Production from Ethanol by Fluorescent Pseudomonads.

Apart from the observation by Alsberg (1911) that gluconic acid is produced from glucose by Phytomonas savastanoi, the oxidative metabolism of fluorescent pseudomonads has received little attention until very recently. For the most part it has been tacitly assumed that these org Ims, by virtue of their obligately aerobic nature, carry out a complete mineralization of organic substrates (den Doo...

Production of 2-Keto-l-Gulonic Acid from d-Glucose by Two-Stage Fermentation.

A practical method for the production of calcium 2-keto-l-gulonate (an intermediate in the Reichstein synthesis of l-ascorbic acid) from d-glucose has been established by using a two-stage fermentation system. d-Glucose was first converted to calcium 2,5-diketo-d-gluconate by a mutant strain of Erwinia sp. in a medium containing d-glucose, corn steep liquor, (NH(4))(2)HPO(4), and CaCO(3). After...
